Those coming seems sort of anticlimactic. Us Rays fans in the blogosphere were looking all over the place for confirmation of who would be joining the team in Miami. And, news gets out and it’s SS Reid Brignac and RP Dale Thayer. Of course, the name most everyone was looking for was David Price. If not him, then Wade Davis.
The Brignac side of these moves is somewhat trivial, a non-event as far as I’m concerned. He’s up for the weekend. He gives the Rays another left-handed bat on the bench for these interleague games. Kazmir’s turn in the rotation comes up Monday. Price is scheduled to pitch tomorrow and Davis on Sunday. We should know very soon if one of them will make Kazmir’s start.
Dale Thayer is the addition I’m more curious about. Sure, he’s earned it. I’m not discounting that. He’s pitched well for Durham. But, my theory is the Rays are about to showcase him for a possible trade. I’m just not sure I see his long-term value with the Rays. But, since he’s never made the jump to the majors, his minor league success has not been validated.
As for Scott Kazmir, I hope his “right quad strain” feels better soon. And, I really hope he’s able to “rehab” for a few starts in Durham to work out this “injury”. Get well soon, Kaz!
