All Things Rays – What to Watch

Posted: 10th June 2009 by Michael Emdeyar in Uncategorized

The Rays play game 2 of a three-game set against the Angels.  In this one, the Rays will face right-hander John Lackey, who has excelled against Tampa Bay in his career.  He has made 11 starts, accumulating a 9-1 record including two complete game shutouts in the process.  After missing the first six weeks of the season, Lackey has struggled a little.  But, he’s coming off a strong seven-inning start at Toronto his last time out.

Jeff Niemann makes the start for the Rays after moving back a day in the rotation to allow James Shields to start a couple of games at the Trop during this homestand.  Niemann, of course, is coming off that spectacular complete game 2-hit shutout of the Royals last week.

In the current 3-game losing streak, the Rays are 2-20 with runners in scoring position.   They are not getting the timely-hitting that is needed to win big ball games.  This quote from Joe Maddon in his post-game interview last night sums it up:  “There were so many things that could have gone our way that didn’t.”  Actually, that sums up the season so far.  But, the Rays have to start making those things go their way.
