All Things Rays – What to Watch in NY

  • The Rays head to a crucial four-game series in the new Yankee Stadium coming off a sweep of the Kansas City Royals.  Tonight, it’s a matchup of left-handers as the Yankees send CC Sabathia to the mound against David Price.  This will be Sabathia’s first start against the Rays this season.  But, prior to that, he has owned the Rays.  His lifetime record against Tampa Bay is 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA.
  • The Yankees are tied atop the AL East with the Boston Red Sox with a 32-22 record.  But, for all the ups and downs that the Rays have experienced in the first third of the season, a  series sweep would draw the Yankees and Rays even in the win column.  As Mel Allen used to say, “How about that?”
  • For as many bad things as I’ve said about BJ Upton so far this season, I have to give credit where credit is due.  He came up big during the homestand, topping it off with a game-winning two-run HR yesterday.   He’s in the midst of an 8-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .189 on May 26 to .218 today.  And, he’s 2 for 6 with both hits being home runs against Sabathia.
