All Things Rays — What to Watch Today

  • It’s Andy Sonnanstine vs. Andy Pettitte in the rubber match of this now 3-game series.  Pettitte comes in 5-2 with a 4.33 ERA.  Historically, he does well against the Rays, as this will be his 27th start against them.  In those games, he’s 15-4 with a 3.78 ERA.  But, this year, he struggled in his first two starts against Tampa Bay, allowing eight runs on 15 hits in 13 1/3 innings.
  • This will be Andy Sonnanstine’s second start in the new Yankee Stadium and third start this season against the Yankees.  He didn’t get a decision in either game, but he has only allowed ten hits and one walk in 12 1/3 innings with a nice 2.92 ERA.
  • More bullpen issues did in the Rays again yesterday.  Matt Garza pitched an outstanding game at Yankee Stadium.  He deserved a better fate.  Thankfully, it would seem like the Rays have more options to consider if they feel the need to  somehow get a consistent mix of arms ready to hold a lead.  Chad Bradford should be nearing the completion of his rehab assignment.  Brian Shouse shouldn’t be too far behind.  And Winston Abreu continues to throw very well for the Durham Bulls.
  • Let’s see, there’s all this talk about the new Yankee Stadium being a launching pad for home runs.  The Rays have nailed Andy Pettite for five home runs so far this season.  That should add up to a high-scoring affair.  Carlos Pena has a couple.  Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist each have one.  Jason Bartlett has the other.  I’ll say BJ and Joe Dillon each get one tonight.

I’ll say we see Gabe Kapler and his .170 ba, in the lineup tonight.
