2009 Offseason Preview: Second Base

The Rays have a log jam at second base, and everyone is asking if Akinori Iwamura will be back. The truth? Nobody knows, but we can speculate. If the Rays were smart, they would not resign Aki and go from within. The Rays have two good options to play second base, and both should probably have a spot on the 25 man roster when the season starts. I think Aki will be let go. Sorry Aki fans, but the other options are cheaper.

It will come down to Sean Rodriguez or Reid Brignac. In the end, it will probably come to Reid Brignac to start the season, since he has had more success in the majors. That could change as the season goes on if Brignac struggles. Now, as for Ben Zobrist, he will become the everyday right fielder and Matt Joyce will wait a little bit.

I would bring Aki back only if he would be willing to be a utility player, backing up Longo and second base, but the Rays could do it cheaper with Brignac or Rodriguez. The Rays are all about being cheap, so in the end, Aki will be the odd man out, especially if the Rays plan to sign CC long term this offseason.

Now, onto the depth chart:
