According to Padres.com, Cliff Floyd, the former Ray known for his clutch hits and being a great guy in the clubhouse in the magical 2008 season, is one of three players that the Padres have waived. That means he is now a free agent. A lot of people give Floyd a lot of credit for the Rays success last season. The question is, should they bring him back?
There are many ways the Rays could bring him back. They could use him as a pinch hitter/ DH. They could recreate the quality assurance coach position and put him there. They could name him hitting coach. The latter may not be the best idea, since he does not have major league experience coaching, but Rays players who were on the 2008 team would probably listen to him, so it may work.
I would be heavily in favor of bringing back Floyd. He was a great guy for the team and the Rays need a veteran guy back in the clubhouse. The Rays really didn’t have a guy like him this season, and that might be part of the reason they didn’t make the playoffs. Personally, I would bring him back to share the DH role with Pat Burrell. The way Burrell played last season, Floyd may be better. All I care, just put him in a uniform and get him in St. Pete. I don’t care how. Maybe they could hide him under the Raymond suit.
