Kings of Kaufmann thinks the Royals should pursue Reid Brignac.
Reid Brignac is an interesting Rays player. He’s come up through the Rays organization as a shortstop. But, Jason Bartlett is firmly implanted there now. Second base might be an option, but the Rays haven’t given him much opportunity there. And, Sean Rodriguez seems to be waiting in the wings to take over that position, albeit perhaps in a platoon with Ben Zobrist.
I think the Rays are going to have to make room for Reid or see what they can get for him on the trade market. Yes, Royals fans, perhaps he could be had.
If it were me, I’d see what I can get for Jason Bartlett on the trade market during the off-season. Brignac showed flashes of offense at the end of the 2009 season. I think his defense will be ok. That’s why I would be ok if the Rays were to trade Bartlett and turn shortstop over to him. Bartlett’s value will never be higher. He’s coming off a career season for him. Yet, I don’t think it’s that superior to anything that Brignac could do in a full season.
Enter the Minnesota Twins. Would the Twins like to get Jason Bartlett back to be their everyday shortstop? In previous posts, I’ve been a proponent of going after Twins reliever Jose Mijares. Any chance the Twins would take the Rays up on that trade?
