James Shields may have a choice to make. Does he open the 2010 season on the mound? Or, does he join his wife in the delivery room?
“I told my wife, ‘I don’t think I’m missing opening day so I might have to meet you in there afterwards. I kind of mess around with her a lot about it, and she’s okay with it. We’re going to play it by ear and just go with the flow.”
That’s what he told St. Petersburg Times writer Marc Topkin. The “flow” would be the birth of his second daughter, due to arrive four days after he’s scheduled to open the 2010 season at the Trop. But, if this daughter decides to jump the gun, Big Game James will have a decision to make.
I’m guessing he’ll choose the delivery room. An opening day start is huge. But, the birth of a child doesn’t measure up.
