FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi posted in their “Buzz” last night that the battle for the fifth starting slot in the Rays rotation may come down to a trade.
There will probably be plenty of trade rumors surrounding Rays right-hander Andy Sonnanstine over the final few weeks of spring training.
Among the teams that could use another starter: the Diamondbacks, Mariners, Mets, Twins, Dodgers and Nationals.
In response, Mike Silva’s New York Baseball Digest offered his take on what the Mets could offer. He’s giving up OF Chris Carter in the deal, suggesting he might make a decent replacement for Carlos Pena. He’s a left-handed bat with a .302 career minor league batting average.
Aside from that, there’s not much chatter on the other blogs about Andy. I’ll float one. How about Dioner Navarro and Andy to the Dodgers for Russell Martin? Yes, the Rays would need to take on salary to make this work.
Martin has fallen out of favor in LA. He had a horrible season last year, and he’s got a groin problem that’s going to keep him out 4-6 weeks, making it unlikely he’ll play opening day. Could the Dodgers be talked into such a deal? I’m intrigued by the potential of Martin in the Rays lineup.

Get this guy off the blogs… seriously, Martin?!?!?!? That makes ZERO sense!! Why in the heck would the Rays take on MORE $ just to get an injured catcher? Didn’t they spend $ to get one in the off season… I’d much rather see Jaso come up full time for a spin than the Rays trade away a much more valued Sonny than Martin!
So, you’re saying you disagree with me? That’s ok. It’s just an idea. I tend to think Russell Martin will have a bounceback season.
