What’s Important Now: Magic Number Down to 8

  • The Rays picked up the win in an extra inning thriller last night. The game ended on a walk off error as Willy Aybar was out with a good throw, but the throw was bad, so the Rays were able to win. With the Rays win and the Red Sox loss, the Rays magic number is now down to 8 for a postseason birth. The Rays have a chance to clinch while in New York this week, or next weekend against the Seattle.
  • David Price gave the Rays a great start, but he struggled in his last inning, the 7th. All his runs came on the 3 run homer by Juan Rivera. The bullpen did not allow any runs in 3 innings, even though there were some tense moments. Rafael Soriano got the win by pitching a scoreless 10th.
  • For the offense, Carl Crawford went 2 for 5. Evan Longoria was 2 for 4. Carlos Pena was 1 for 3 with the game tying hit. Reid Brignac was 2 for 4 with a 2 run homer to put the Rays on the board.
  • The Rays will look to take the rubber game of this series today. The Rays offense will face Scott Kazmir. Kazmir is 8-14 with a 5.99 ERA on the season. This will be Kazmir’s first start at the Trop since being traded to the Angels last season. His last time out against the Rays, he went 5 1/3 and allowed 3 earned. The Rays need to win this game and hope for a Yankees loss to propel themselves into first place.
  • The Rays will send Jeff Niemann to the mound in search of a bounce back start. Niemann is 10-6 with a 4.32 ERA on the season. He pitched decently his last time out, going 5 innings and allowing 3 earned. He missed a lot of locations the last time out. We need to see the Jeff Niemann from earlier in the season tonight and hopefully he can get the Rays a win.
