ESPN’s Keith Law updated his top-25 prospect list in this subscription-only post. And, the two Tampa Bay Rays prospects saw a significant improvement to their rankings.
Left-handed starter Matt Moore is at #6, up from #16. He’s off to a great start this season despite a 2-3 record. His ERA stands at 2.91 and he has 76 strike outs in 52+ innings. More importantly, he’s walked only 14, showing much improved command this season in Montgomery.
Multiple reports of improved command beyond just the reduced walk rate. The Rays don’t operate this way, but in a lot of organizations he’d be on speed-dial for the next opening in the big league rotation.
Desmond Jennings also breaks the top-10, coming in at #9, up from #20. In a nutshell, Law quotes a “source” who says Jennings seems “bored” at Durham. His numbers aren’t off the charts so far this season, but he’s proven that he can play at that level and he’s staying healthy. I think many Rays fans are simply waiting to see when the call is made.
