- Justin Verlander proved to be too much for the Rays offense, as they were only able to muster one run on 3 hits in his 7 innings. They were able to get a second run off of Jose Valverde, but it was too late at that point. Matt Joyce led off with a home run, but Jeff Niemann gave it right back the next inning. Evan Longoria got the other run on a homer in the 9th.
- Jeff Niemann picked up his first loss since returning from the DL 10 starts ago, but he did pitch well. In the end he was charged with 4 runs on 6 hits in 7.1 innings after leaving with the bases loaded. Two of the runs came off of an Alex Avila homer in the 2nd. Juan Cruz gave up the 5th and final run in his inning of work.
- The Rays will look to get back on the winning side of the ledger tonight in the second game of a four game series with Detroit. David Price will take the hill for the Rays. Price has pitched amazingly lately, having two brilliant starts against the Yankees and Red Sox. Last time out he pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits to the Red Sox. We will see if he can keep it going tonight at the Trop.
- The Tigers will have Brad Penny on the mound to face the Rays offense. Penny is 8-9 with a 4.97 ERA on the season. He has been decent lately, so we will see if the Rays can get to him and give Price some support.
