- The Rays returned to their old ways last night, getting no offense and having the bullpen spoil a great start. Sounds a lot like what the Rays were doing mid-season. The Rays did manage 7 hits, but they could only push across two runs. Evan Longoria was the star, going 2 for 4 with a 2 run homer and a double. BJ Upton was 1 for 3 with a run and a walk.
- David Price made a great start for the Rays, going 6.2 innings and allowing 2 earned on 4 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 3. Price left with the game tied in hopes of keeping it there, but JP Howell spoiled that, allowing a 2 run homer to put the Orioles up for good.
- Tonight the Rays will hope to turn things around heading into their most important series of the season with the Red Sox. Wade Davis will be on the hill for the Rays looking to replicate his last start. Last time out he allowed 2 earned on 6 hits while going the distance.
- The Rays will be facing Jeremy Guthrie, who will take the hill for the Orioles. The Rays handed him a loss the last time they faced him. He allowed 3 earned on 7 hits in 5 innings. The Rays need a similar performance, if not a better one, tonight if they want to head into Boston with a win.
How many games have we lost this year because of JP Howell? We would be near first place if we could have those games back. He hasn’t been the same since his surgery and return, and I don’t know how the manager can give him the baseball in a do or die situation. Howell should have been sent back to Durham a long time ago to work things out or stay there.
